As gig workers from Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Zepto, Amazon and Flipkart are going on strike, the New Year celebrations will be affected. Why the strike?
The strike was called by Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT). Some unions in parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu also supported it. Workers say that while working hours are increasing, income is steadily decreasing. Lack of job security, accident insurance, lack of respect and lack of safety are the main allegations. They allege that companies are not giving due priority to delivery partners who form the backbone of India’s digital market.

Online delivery platforms such as Swiggy, Zomato, Flipkart, Blinkit will be severely affected as Gir workers are on strike. Customers may not receive deliveries. There is a chance that the delivery time on December 31 will increase more than before. Better not to rely on quick commerce apps for urgent items.
