T20 World Cup: After the Bangladesh team refused to go to the T20 World Cup 2026 to be held in India, Scotland will be selected in place of that team. The main reason for this development is the ongoing dispute between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over the venue dispute. Bangladesh asked to shift their group matches to co-host Sri Lanka instead of India, citing security concerns. However, an independent security assessment conducted by the ICC found that there was no threat to Bangladesh players or officials in India. Also, the ICC has clarified that it is not possible to make schedule changes very close to the start of the tournament.

However, yesterday (January 21) ICC issued an ultimatum to Bangladesh to decide whether to come to India or not. If they refuse, they will be removed from the tournament and another team will be added. In response, the BCB at a press meet today (January 22) reignited the debate, accusing the ICC of failing to find a solution to the problem. Despite Scotland’s failure to qualify behind Italy, Netherlands and Jersey in the European qualifiers, they are at the top of the ICC T20I rankings among the teams that did not qualify for the tournament. Therefore, the ICC feels that Scotland is the perfect alternative if a last-minute change is required.

Further, these developments have intensified in the background of ongoing political tensions between India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s protest over the removal of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL also caused tension. The BCB said that the final decision on the participation of the Bangladesh team in the World Cup tournament will be taken in consultation with the government. In the end, with Bangladesh officially dropping out, it is understood that the organizers will approve the inclusion of Scotland in order to preserve the World Cup schedule and the integrity of the tournament. This will be a rare change in the history of the ICC tournament. This incident clearly shows how political and administrative challenges affect cricket beyond cricket.
