Azharuddin: Another interesting turn has started in the political reign of Indian cricket legend Mohammad Azharuddin. It has become a hot topic in political circles to get minister portfolio before being elected as MLA or MLC. According to the constitution, a person who is a minister must be elected to any legislature for six months. Otherwise, the minister post will be canceled by itself. This extraordinary development is reminiscent of the late Nandamuri Harikrishna incident.
Azharuddin faces six-month ministerial challenge
In fact, the Congress government decided to send Azharuddin as governor quota MLC. But, unfortunately, this process has stalled as the MLC seat is currently in Supreme Court litigation. It is noteworthy that the case which started on the rejection of the names sent by the BRS government is pending in the court. Due to this, there is no clarity on Azhar’s political future.
Many legal cases against Azharuddin have also become a major obstacle for him. Political circles say that the chances of the Governor nominating him are slim, especially in view of serious allegations of sedition. If Azhar does not become an MLC, as per the constitutional rule, he will have to resign from the post of minister after six months. It all depends on the Governor’s decision.
However, the Congress party seems to have a strategy in this regard. If Danam Nagender is disqualified, the Khairatabad Assembly seat is likely to fall vacant. Then the party has a plan to contest Azharuddin from that seat in the by-election. Or there is a provision in the constitution to resign and take oath as a new minister. All in all, Azhar’s political journey is now turning into a constitutional suspense story and attracting attention.
