The US boycotted the summit and sent only one diplomat from its embassy to the summit. In the process, South Africa refused to hand over the presidency of the G20 to the US representative, describing the representative sent by the US to the meeting as a low-level person. At the end of each summit, the presidency is handed over to the next country. In 2026, the US is supposed to take over the presidency of the G20.

READ ALSO: YS Jagan: Government does not care about record low crop prices

South Africa says the US sending only a civilian diplomat from its embassy is an insult to President Cyril Ramaphosa. In fact, it is known that US President Donald Trump boycotted the summit, accusing South Africa of apartheid and anti-white policies and oppressing its Afrikaner white minority.

When will the official transfer take place?
South Africa’s Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola said that America is a member of the G20. If it wants to be represented, an officer of appropriate rank should be sent. He explained that this summit is for leaders. Therefore, the representative participating on behalf of a country in this conference should be the country’s president or a special envoy appointed by the president. It should be at least ministerial level. But the representative who participated on behalf of America in this meeting was not a person of that level. South Africa’s foreign minister said the formal transfer of the G20 presidency to the US would take place later, possibly at the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs building.

Meanwhile, tensions between America and South Africa increased. Ramaphosa claimed that America changed its mind at the last minute and expressed its desire to attend the summit. But the White House denied it. US Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt said that Ramaphosa was speaking excessively against America and the President. South Africa took another unique step at this summit. The Leaders’ Declaration is usually issued at the end of the summit. But South Africa issued it on the first day. America objected to this.

READ ALSO: Delhi Drug Seizes: Rs 200 Crore Drugs Seized In Delhi..

Published Date: November 23, 2025 8:11 p.m G20 Summit Dispute: The G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa ended in a diplomatic row.
