BMC Elections: Even though the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are over, the political controversies are not over yet. The lottery draw for the prestigious mayoral position was held on Thursday. In this lottery, the post of Mayor of Mumbai was won by a woman. Mayor of Mumbai is reserved for “General Woman”. However, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena UBT raised serious objections to the process and results, causing confusion. <\/p>\n

Uddhav Sena leader, former Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar on reservation of Mumbai mayor’s post questioned why the seat of BMC mayor was not included in the OBC category. She said that for the last two terms, this post was without reservation. The state minister said that these objections have been taken into consideration. Uddhav’s party is alleging that there is fixing to benefit the ruling alliance. Kishori said that the government has changed the rules of ST category reservation and the rules of minimum number of members from that category have been changed at the last minute. He said Mumbai cannot be included in ST category deliberately as Uddhav’s party has only two councilors from this category.<\/p>\n

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won the recently held Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Thackeray’s dominance over the last two decades has come to an end. The BJP-Shinde Sena alliance won a clear majority. In Mumbai, which has 227 seats, BJP won 89 seats and Shinde Shiv Sena 29 seats. The majority required for power is 114 seats. While BJP+Shinde Sena won seats beyond the magic figure. <\/p>\n

Under reservation, mayor posts are reserved for women in Pune, Dhule, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Nanded, Navi Mumbai, Malegaon, Mira Bhayandar, Nashik and Nagpur. On the other hand, three municipal corporations, Latur, Jalna and Thane, are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC), of which Latur, Jalna are reserved for SC women.
\nAll eight municipal corporations are reserved for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. Of these, Akola, Chandrapur, Ahalyanagar, Jalgaon are reserved for OBC women.
