In the final, which started two hours late due to rain, South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl. India made a huge score of 298 runs. This is the second highest score in Women’s World Cup final history. Openers Smriti Mandhana (45) and Shafali Verma (87) put on a partnership of 104 runs. Shafali played an excellent innings of 78 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Jemima Rodrigues, Harmanpreet were dismissed early and Deepti Sharma (58) held the innings. At the end, Richa Ghosh (24) put India in a strong position with a quick innings.
South African captain Laura Volwardt, who came into the ring with a target of 299 runs, put some tension on India with a wonderful century (101 runs). Along with her, Sune loose pair and Shafali Verma proved to be a game changer with crucial bowling. Deepti Sharma excelled with her all round performance. She scored 58 runs in batting and only 39 runs in bowling and took 5 wickets. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur took a brilliant catch to dismiss Nadine de Klerk off Deepti Sharma to seal the victory. When this last wicket fell, the entire Indian team was immersed in celebrations.
